Can someone help me find the name of a novel I once read?

The novel I am trying to find was written before 2000 – I think I read it in the mid 90’s but it could have been a bit later. It was fiction and I think it was a romance novel. And the author may have been either Barbara Delinsky, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele, Fern Michaels, or LaVyrle Spencer. I can only remember how it began. There was a collapse of some type of walkway inside a hall where there was a party going on. Many people were killed. The main character was standing outside when it happened. I think someone may have been an architect in the story – maybe the person who actually had a part in building the walkway. I couldn’t put the book down because it was so good. I’m sorry that I don’t know any more details. Can anyone help? Thanks
